We interviewed three high school students - Christopher Hammond '22 (C), Alyssa Accosta ‘22 (A), and Grace Reiner ‘25 (G)
What sports did you play at CH and for how many years?
C: I played basketball at CH since 4th grade. I played volleyball every year from 7th grade to senior year except for my junior year because of covid. I played football in 7th, 8th, and 12th grades.
G: This year I played varsity tennis and soccer for the first time in high school but have played both sports since I was 5.
A: I played soccer and softball at CH. I played soccer for 3 years at CH (opted out junior year because of the covid protocol) and I played softball at CH for 3 years (we didn't get a season my sophomore year).
How do you balance school, life + athletics - time management tips?
C: I have to find time to do work other than just when I get home from school. For example using free blocks and being productive during class. A huge part of my time management is not letting work pile up, or else I will have no time to breathe.
G: I made an effort to balance school and athletics so that I did not fall behind in my classes. I prioritized staying in touch with my teachers through email and in-person meetings. Being proactive was extremely important to keep me from falling behind on work.
A: Every year has been a struggle, keeping up with school work and managing softball but, I've adapted and grown better every year. In my head I've categorized these three things: school, softball, and life and put them in that order to remind myself of what's most important. Campbell Hall teachers truly care about you and want what's best for you, which is not common at schools. Lastly, another thing that has helped me with staying caught up and time management is lists. When you're playing a sport and doing school it can be so hard to remember everything you must do, so once a week I sit down before doing my homework and list everything I must do.
What motivates you?
C: I am motivated by my parents, coaches, friends, and my own personal goals.
G: I am motivated by trying to become better at what makes me happy. I enjoy pushing myself to see what I am capable of accomplishing. My parents have always told me to give it my all and believe in my capabilities.
A: Having this love and support from my family is what motivates me throughout life and softball, through it all.
What is the best thing about athletics?
C: The best thing about athletics is the relationships you build with teammates and coaches.
G: One of the best things that comes from taking part in Campbell Hall athletics is the community that is built by the athletes and coaches. I get to play with people I have been friends with, some for a long time, while creating new bonds with others. Athletics at Campbell Hall have brought me close to people I love and trust.
A: The best thing about playing a sport, softball, is how liberating it is for me. No matter what I am going through softball has always been my escape and my place.
What are you looking forward to playing at the next level in college?
C: I am looking forward to being a small fish in a big pond. I want to learn from people who have done what I am trying to do, and gain insight from more experienced players.
A: I have many goals for myself that I wish to accomplish while playing in college, but mostly I want to be able to play for myself. I’m looking forward to the different levels of competition and learning how to compete at the next level.
